Hanover National Bank heir. He was the victim of what Life magazine called the Shooting of the Century.
He served as director of the Hanover Bank after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was one of America's most highly esteemed horse breeders.
He had two sons, William III and James, with his wife and future killer Ann Crowell. He was tragically shot by Ann, who thought he was a burglar.
His death was the subject of Truman Capote 's unfinished novel Answered Prayers from 1986.
