ABOUT WILLIAM WAKEFIELD BAUM
American cardinal of the Catholic Church who served as the Archbishop of Washington from 1973 to 1980.
He studied philosophy at Glennon College in St. Louis in the 1940's.
He was the last cardinal elevated by Pope Paul VI.
He adopted the last name of the Jewish stepfather who raised him.
He participated as a cardinal elector in the 2005 papal conclave that selected Pope Benedict XVI .
