Although he did not invent voguing, he refined its movements and helped it reach fame. He died of AIDS-related heart failure at the age of 45.

He spent time in Washington Square Park in New York City, honing his dance skills with fellow voguers. He was the star of the 1989 Malcolm McLaren music video for his song "Deep in Vogue."
He was born William Roscoe Leake in New Hyde Park, New York. He was of mixed racial ancestry.
