He was a star pitcher at Belmont High School in Massachusetts before signing his first contract with the Boston Red Sox.
He once lost both games in a doubleheader.
He had three children with his wife Janet.
He neary won the Cy Young Award in 1972, but lost to Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry .
