He and his father faced federal tax-evasion charges. He was saved from jail time by a plea bargain. Walter used the pages of his father's publications to rail against their enemies.

He enjoyed a lavish lifestyle himself, but he still gave away millions of dollars to causes as varied as schools, an Israeli emergency fund, and the United Negro College Fund.

His father Moses built up much of the media empire that Walter inherited and multiplied.

He collected and donated many impressionist artworks and was especially fond of Vincent van Gogh .
