Defensively gifted center fielder selected to four All-Star teams during his eighteen-year career.
He went to the same high school in California, McClymonds High School, as Hall of Fame outfielder Frank Robinson .
He coached for two different expansion teams after his playing career ended: the Seattle Mariners and Florida Marlins.
He had four children, Valerie, Rene, Kimberly and Vada III.
He attended McClymonds High School in Oakland, California, the same school as Frank Robinson and Hall of Fame basketball player Bill Russell .
