Known for his powerful fastball and hard slider, he led the National League in saves in 1999 with 41 for the Montreal Expos.
He attended school at Liceo Peres Bonalde de Miranda.
In 2007, he was convicted of attempted murder and served nearly six years in prison.
His mother Maura Villarreal was kidnapped in 2004.
Power-hitting right fielder Vladimir Guerrero was his teammate on the Expos.
