He started out writing poetry, then made his first song at the age of 11. At school, he joined a poetry club that held cyphers (poetry slams) every Friday.
He was the third artist to sign with pgLang, the multidisciplinary media company founded by rapper Kendrick Lamar and director Dave Free , in conjunction with Def Jam Recordings.
He was born Avante Ramone Santana in Los Angeles. His mother is a spoken word artist. He has stated that "he might share some relatives" with fellow pgLang artist Baby Keem .
He has said that his influences range from Frank Ocean , Andre 3000 , and Missy Elliott to Blake Griffin , Jared Leto , and Aaron Gordon .
