Brooklyn-based rapper and social activist who infuses his political messages into his work. His 2007 album Eardrum reached the #2 position on the Billboard 200 chart.
He came to prominence as part of Black Star, a critically acclaimed collaboration with Mos Def .
As part of Black Star, he focused on the lack of leadership for young rappers after the deaths of Biggie and Tupac.
His parents, both university faculty members, named him after the Arabic word for "student." He married DJ Eque in 2009. He has two children, Diani Eshe and Amani Fela Greene.
He earned praised for his lyrics from Jay-Z , and contributed to Kanye West's highly successful single, Get 'Em High.
