Second African American woman to visit space, she participated in NASA's 2006 Space Shuttle Discovery mission to the International Space Station.
She attended Harvard University and the University of Texas.
She was Mission Specialist on STS-120, STS-121, and STS-131.
She married Julius McCurdy.
Preceded by fellow astronaut Mae Jemison , she was the second African American woman in space.
