He was a star pitcher in the Cubs' Minor League system, where he was voted pitcher of the year in 2005.

He played for four different MLB teams in his first four seasons: the Cubs, Athletics, Padres and Pirates.

He had a daughter named Grace with his wife Jennifer Gallagher.

His rookie season, he was part of a Cubs pitching staff that included Carlos Zambrano .
