Two time featherweight world champion as well as junior lightweight champion who recorded 103 victories by knockout out of 144 wins and 162 total matches.
He made his professional debut on March 7, 1944 against Earl Roys and defeated him.
He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
His nephew is Joseph Saddler or Grandmaster Flash as he is also known.
He retired early due to an injury to his eye and became a trainer for a young George Foreman .
