ABOUT SANDY MARTINEZ

Former catcher who played for six MLB teams from 1995 to 2004; became a manager after retirement, first coaching the Washington Nationals' affiliate in the Dominican Summer League in 2010.

He was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1990, and worked his way up the farm system, making his Major League debut on June 24, 1995.

He hit five home runs in his first two seasons, but only one more for the rest of his career.

He was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, before coming to the United States for baseball.

On May 6, 1998, he was the catcher for Kerry Wood in the famous game in which Wood tied the MLB record for most strikeouts in a 9-inning game with 20.
