She wrote plays about Sally Hemings including From the Diary of Sally Hemings, Sally, and A Bed Made in Heaven.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and her Master of Arts in creative writing from Michigan State University.
Her plays, including her acclaimed 2011 play Music History, became known for dealing with issues of racism and the struggle for civil rights.
Her grandmother, Emma Louish Evans, performed in amateur minstrel shows.
She gained much acclaim for her trilogy of plays concerning a mixed-race girl who is thought to have had a romantic relationship with U.S. President Thomas Jefferson .
