Canadian-born dancer and actress who appeared in the 1933 film version of 42nd Street. She also starred in the 1972 Broadway revival of No, No, Nanette.
Her family's financial situation caused her to almost miss out on dance classes as a girl; however, a supportive dance teacher gave her free lessons on Saturdays.
At age fourteen, she began dancing professionally.
She was married twice. Her first marriage, to singer Al Jolson , lasted from 1928 until 1940.
Her husband, Al Jolson , was the best-paid American entertainer of the 1930s.
