Her family's financial situation caused her to almost miss out on dance classes as a girl; however, a supportive dance teacher gave her free lessons on Saturdays.
At age fourteen, she began dancing professionally.
She was married twice. Her first marriage, to singer Al Jolson , lasted from 1928 until 1940.
Her husband, Al Jolson , was the best-paid American entertainer of the 1930s.
