Broadcaster for NBC, CBS, PBS, and the History Channel. An acclaimed news anchor, he received the Joan Shorenstein Award, the Peabody Award, and multiple Emmy Awards.
He began his journalistic career with The Richmond News Leader.
He received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University in Virginia and his graduate degree from the University of North Carolina.
He married Emma Jeanne Spears on October 28, 1957. He and Spears had four children together.
He conducted a famous 1979 interview of politician Ted Kennedy .
