ABOUT ROGER ANGELL

Though he was also known for his New Yorker Christmas poems and for his works of fiction and literary criticism, this New York-based writer is most famous for his sports journalism pieces. He received the 2011 PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement Award for Literary Sports Writing, among many other honors.

After graduating from Harvard University, he served in World War II with the United States Army Air Forces.

The Baseball Writers' Association of America honored him with its 2014 J. G. Taylor Spink Award. He lived to be 101 years old.

His first marriage, to Evelyn Baker, resulted in daughters named Callie and Alice. With his second wife, Carol Rogge Angell, he had a son named John Henry.

His mother, Katharine Sergeant Angell White, was the fiction editor for The New Yorker, and his stepfather, E.B. White , wrote the classic children's book Charlotte's Web. He grew up primarily in the care of his father, American Civil Liberties Union leader Ernest Angell.
