Singer-songwriter and musician who sang "Killing Me Softly With His Song," "Where is the Love," and "The Closer I Get to You."

She was given a full music scholarship to Howard University and worked with Chevy Chase as a student teacher.

Her song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" won her a Grammy Award in 1973.

She married Steve Novosel in 1965 and they divorced in 1972.

She recorded a number of duets with Donny Hathaway , including "Where Is the Love" and "The Closer I Get to You."
