Clemson University recruited him to play quarterback, but ultimately he chose to pursue baseball instead.
He played the majority of his big league career with the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.
He was born in Turners Falls, Massachusetts and has two children.
Catcher Todd Hundley was his teammate on the Mets.
