ABOUT RICHARD MELLON SCAIFE

This billionaire Mellon family heir is perhaps best remembered for publishing the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He also founded several non-profit, public policy organizations, including the Carthage and Sarah Scaife Foundations.

After being forced to leave Yale University as a result of his participation in a party involving alcohol consumption, he enrolled in the English Department at the University of Pittsburgh.

His extreme dislike for Democratic President Bill Clinton led him to give close to two million dollars to the Arkansas Project of The American Spectator (which sought to substantiate claims of sexual harassment against Clinton).

He grew up in Pittsburgh as the son of Sarah Mellon and Alan Scaife. With his first wife, Frances Gilmore, he had a daughter and a son; his second marriage, to Margaret Battle, also ended in divorce.

He donated nearly a million dollars to the re-election campaign of President Richard Nixon .
