He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1986 and spent five years in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut in 1991.

He retired in 2005 with over 1,300 hits and a .272 batting average.

He moved from Puerto Rico to California with his family before attending high school.

He was teammates with Derek Jeter on the Yankees during the 2005 season.
