ABOUT PIERCE BULTER

Former British officer who was a Founding Father and one of the original Framers of the Constitution. He served South Carolina as its' Senator from 1789 to 1796 and then again from 1802 to 1804.

He commanded a British army unit that fired the first shots in the Boston Massacre, but he came to the American side and helped organized South Carolina's defense.

Despite losing a large part of his estate during the British occupation of South Carolina, he emerged a leading voice for reconciliation after the war.

His wife Mary Middleton's fortune allowed him to cut ties with the Old World and settle permanently in America.

In the U.S. government he opposed the policies of Alexander Hamilton and the Federalists, while supporting the institution of slavery.
