ABOUT PAPPY DAILY

Former railroad worker who turned to music producing under the Starday label, introducing some of country's biggest acts.

He worked for 14 years as a clerk in the Southern Pacific Railroad's tax department, but with the onset of the Great Depression changed professions to sell coin-operated jukeboxes in Houston.

He moved from selling jukeboxes to selling recordings. He co-founded his popular record label, which at one time boasted stars like Jimmie Dean, George Jones , and Roger Miller .

He was born in Yoakum, Texas, his father dying soon after his birth and his mother remarrying and moving the family to Houston.

His record label's biggest stars included the musician Big Bopper whose hit Chantilly Lace was a top seller for decades.
