Legendary Chicago newspaper columnist who wrote over 7,500 columns over the course of his three decade career. He was once a recipient of the Pulitzer in 1972 for Distinguished Commentary.
He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1952.
In 1990, he won the National Press Club Lifetime Achievement Award.
He was of Polish and Ukrainian descent on his mother's and father's side, respectively.
Frank Sinatra called him a "pimp" after he criticized the Chicago Police Department for providing an around-the-clock guard for the crooner.
