Former left-handed starting pitcher whose best season came in 1978 when he won 22 games and led the league with 23 complete games.
He played college baseball at North Carolina State.
He pitched 14 years in the big leagues, playing for the San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, and Milwaukee Brewers.
He grew up with his family in Tarboro, North Carolina.
His 22-9 record and 2.36 ERA in 1978 would have netted him the Cy Young Award most seasons, but he finished second to Ron Guidry , who had an even better season, winning 25 games and posting a paper thin 1.74 ERA.
