ABOUT MICHAEL HAMBURGER
A German-English author, translator, poet, critic, and scholar, he published The Truth of Poetry, an important work of literary criticism, in 1968. His other works include Circling the Square (poems) and String of Beginnings (memoir).
He studied at Christ Church, Oxford and served in the British Army during World War II. He later taught at both University College London and the University of Reading.
He received an Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor in 1992.
He was born into a Jewish family in Berlin, Germany and moved to England when he was nine years old.
He translated the work of Friedrich Holderlin from German to English.
