Drummer who has received fourteen Grammy Award nominations and was a professor at William Patterson University.
He grew up in New York, raised by Russian immigrants. He started playing music as a teenager, joining Stan Kenton in 1954.
He wrote a book on the art of drumming.
He died of melanoma.
He was influenced by Duke Ellington .
