He attended Oberlin College.
He was the first African-American television news anchor in the nation, as well as one of the first broadcast journalists to lose their lives to AIDS.
He had one son with his wife, Beverly Hamilton.
Rev. Jesse Jackson gave a eulogy at his funeral.
