He self-taught how to use a video camera and become a literal one-man video journalist. This technique allowed him to later cover wars throughout the Middle East without the need for a large crew.

He and his crew won a 2021 Emmy Award for Outstanding Newscast. He is fluent in both English and Arabic. He won a coveted PEN Award for his book about the Damascus uprising which he covered as it happened.
