He was first signed by the Texas Rangers in 2007.

He developed a pitching arsenal featuring a low-to-mid-90s fastball, deceptive changeup, and curveball.

He grew up in Guanare, Portuquesa, Venezuela.

With a similar height, handedness, prime velocity, reliance on a changeup, and Venezuelan background, he began receiving frequent comparisons to Cy Young Award-winner Johan Santana .
