ABOUT MARIO MENDOZA

Baseball player known for playing nine seasons in Major League Baseball throughout the 70s and 80s. His name has also been associated with batting ineptitude. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates , Seattle Mariners , and Texas Rangers .

He was scouted by the Pittsburg Pirates while playing with the Mexico City Red Devils in 1970. He was noticed for his ability to field grounders in the infield.

His name was used to describe the "Mendoza line" which is used as a stand-in for batting ineptitude. A batting average of .200 is the universally acknowledged "Mendoza line." He averaged .215 in his career.

He was born in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico.
