Marilyn Hacker
ABOUT MARILYN HACKER
American poet, literary critic, translator, and academic known for works such as Going Back to the River and Presentation Piece. The latter collection received the National Book Award for Poetry.
She grew up in The Bronx as the daughter of Jewish immigrants and began her studies at New York University at age fifteen.
She won the 2009 PEN Award for her translation of Marie Etienne's King of a Hundred Horsemen.
She identified as a lesbian, but married gay science fiction writer Samuel Delany . The couple had a daughter in 1974 before divorcing on good terms in 1980.
She edited a literary journal at New York University that published poems by Charles Simic .
