ABOUT MARIE ELIZABETH ZAKRZEWSKA
Physician known as a pioneering female doctor in the United States. She established the New England Hospital for Women and Children.
After several rejections, she was accepted to the midwifery school, Royal Charité Hospital in Berlin. She became the youngest woman to attend the school.
In 1854, a year after arriving in New York, she was introduced to Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell and was invited to join the staff at the Blackwell's dispensary.
She became interested in medicine after assisting her mother, who worked as a midwife.
She was friends with William Lloyd Garrison , Wendell Phillips and Karl Heinzen.
