ABOUT MAKSIMILIJAN VANKA
Eastern European painter who created murals for the St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Pennsylvania. His work often consisted of social commentary on fascism, war, and poverty.
He served in the Belgian Red Cross during World War I.
He was the subject of the 1981 play "Gift to America" by David P. Demarest, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
He moved to the United States in the 1930s with his wife Margaret and the couple's daughter Peggy.
He and Diego Rivera were both well-known muralists.
