Composer of Manhattan Serenade and Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans, which was revived following Hurricane Katrina.
He studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and played on vaudeville for such headliners as Irène Bordoni and Nora Bayes .
He was nominated for two Academy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975.
