ABOUT LELAND H. HARTWELL

Biologist who was the director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. He received a Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 2001 for his discovery of protein molecules that control the division of cells.

He attended the California Institute of Technology in 1961 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He discovered the fundamental role of checkpoints in cell cycle control while researching and working with yeast.

He grew up in Los Angeles, and occasionally lectured at Arizona State University.

He received the Nobel Prize along with Paul Nurse .
