He started designing his own clothes at 16 after learning the basics of sewing from his father.

According to People magazine, he was one of the 100 richest African Americans in 1996.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York.

In 1999, he presented one of his collections to President Bill Clinton during an informal show at The White House.
