ABOUT JOSEPHINE MILES

American poet, professor, and literary critic known for Prefabrications and more than a dozen other poetry collections. Also a publisher, she established the Berkeley Poetry Review in the mid-1970s.

She began suffering in childhood from a degenerative form of arthritis; nevertheless, she was able to attend both the University of California-Los Angeles and the University of California-Berkeley.

She was the first female professor to receive academic tenure at the University of California-Berkeley's English Department.

She moved with her family from Chicago to Los Angeles when she was a young girl.

She helped Allen Ginsberg find a publisher for Howl, his Beat generation masterpiece.
