Professional journalist and television personality who became known for writing for The Washington Post's PostPartisan blog. Previously, he was a member of the editorial board for the New York Daily News.

He graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.

He won a 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Best Editorial Writing for his pieces about Harlem's Apollo Theater.

He married his boyfriend Nick Schmit in January 2017. Former U.S. attorney general Eric Holder presided over their wedding ceremony. His mother's name is Margaret.

In 2016, he made a controversial accusation about Bernie Sanders misrepresenting a photo of himself at a civil rights sit-in.
