He was a was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corps and served in World War I.

He had a U.S. Navy destroyer named after him, the USS John W. Thomason (DD-760).

He married Leda Bass in 1917, and they had one son named Jack.

He was a friend and classmate of Marine and author Laurence Stallings .
