Cheerful critic who worked for ABC's Good Morning America for over 25 years.
While attending college in Georgia in the 1960s he helped to organize black voters.
He was a master of the thumbnail-length reviews, and won several Emmy Awards for his work.
His grandmother, an immigrant from Romania, was one of the survivors of the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911.
He wrote the book for the musical The First, which was about Jackie Robinson . The book earned him a Tony Award nomination.
