Writer for The New Republic and The New York Times and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, known for his book Primary Colors. He was written for The Washington Post and Rolling Stone.

He began reporting for the Essex County News in 1969.

His novel Primary Colors was based on the 1992 Democratic presidential primary and spent nine weeks at number one on the New York Times Bestseller list.

He was married to Janet Eklund from 1967 to 1975.

His novel Primary Colors was made into a film starring John Travolta as a presidential hopeful.
