He played college football and ran track at the University of Oregon . He has also coached.

He was given the California Prep Sports Writer Association Award 14 years in a row. He was inducted into the California Coaches Association Hall of Fame. His favorite outdoor activity is sailing.

He is married to Heather Miceli. They have three children and a grandchild.
