6-time MLB All-Star who was traded in 1971 for a prospect named Nolan Ryan . He spent the bulk of his career with the Los Angeles and California Angels but also played for the New York Mets, Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates.
His father, who was a semi-professional player, coached his little-league team.
Several years after Los Angeles traded him, he returned to coach the team.
His parents, Archie and Margaret, ran a grocery store that afforded him a comfortable middle class childhood.
Gene Autry owned the Angels when he coached them from 1978 to '81.
