Hall of Fame MLB pitcher who recorded 224 wins before gaining fame as a Congressman and Senator.

He attended Xavier University and earned his bachelor's degree in economics.

He threw two no-hitters during his career, one with the Detroit Tigers and a second in a perfect game with the Philadelphia Phillies.

He married Mary Catherine Theis in 1952 and they had five daughters and four sons together.

He retired from baseball with the second-most strikeouts in history behind Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson .
