Catcher and first baseman who made his MLB debut in 2007 for the Seattle Mariners after winning the Johnny Bench Award as the nation's top college catcher at USC.

At Marshalltown High School in Iowa, he broke former New York Yankees prospect Drew Henson's national high school home run record.

He joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010.

He was born and raised in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Speedy outfielder Ichiro Suzuki was his teammate on the Mariners.
