She began playing the piano at 10 and studied ballet during her teenage years after a failed cheerleading audition. She attended Brea Olinda High School and later graduated from Los Alamitos High School. She was scouted by a modeling agent while working as a bartender in 2002. She made her modeling debut on the Paris runway for Ann Demeulemeester that same year. She was featured on the British i-D magazine in September 2002.

She has worked closely with Marc Jacobs throughout her career, and even performed at the launch of his fragrance Decadence.
