Scottish professor and Old Testament scholar, who published the influential The Semantics of Biblical Language.
In 1951, he was ordained to the ministry of the Church of Scotland.
He was editor of the Oxford Hebrew Dictionary project and the Journal of Semitic Studies.
His grandfather was the politician James Barr.
He held a professorship at Vanderbilt University, whose notable alumni include author James Patterson .
