Twentieth-century, German-born composer whose musical works include psalms for organ, plucked double bass motets, and oratorio.
After graduating from the Freiburg Conservatory, he headed the Spandauer Kirchenmusikschule, a prominent German school for the study of sacred music.
His best-known individual compositions include Missa Profana, Symphonia Sacra, and The Bible of Spirituals.
His wife, Renate Zimmerman, had a career as an organist.
He was the 1982 recipient of the prestigious Johann Sebastian Bach Prize.
