Composer and lyricist known for At Last, That's Amore, I Only Have Eyes for You, and countless other songs.

He used to play the piano in cafes and silent-movie houses.

He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and he won three Academy Awards for Best Song for Lullaby of Broadway, You'll Never Know, and On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe.

He married Josephine Wensler in 1917. They had two children together.

He collaborated with Al Dubin , Billy Rose, and Mack Gordon.
